Coenraad K. van Kalken | MD, PhD | Chief Executive Officer

Coen holds ample experience in managing the technological development and commercial roll-out of innovations in the health and life sciences. He is a medical doctor by training and after working in the clinic for several years, he was appointed director of the New Drug Development Office (NDDO), a research institute specialized in the development of drugs against cancer. During his career his passion shifted towards the prevention and early diagnosis of diseases and later he decided to dedicate his time and money to this goal. In 2005, after the acquisition of NDDO by INC Research, he founded the Dutch Institute for Prevention and E-health Development (NIPED). With NIPED, he introduced an innovative, personal approach for detecting health risks and stimulating a healthy lifestyle. The strategic and active management style of dr. Van Kalken resulted in the successful development of the ‘Personal Health Check’ and the widespread support for the roll-out of this product by the major Dutch health organisations (Public Health Service, the Dutch College of General Practitioners, Heart Foundation, Kidney Foundation, Lung Foundation Netherlands, Diabetes Foundation).

Leonie de Best | MSc | Chief Operations Officer

Leonie has more than 20 years of experience in the biotech industry as researcher, project leader, team leader, and Chief Operations Officer. She worked at Kiadis, Octoplus and Skyline-Diagnostics. Under her direction at Skyline-Diagnostics, various in-vitro diagnostic tests for genetic profiling of Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Multiple Myeloma were CE registered in Europe. Moreover, diagnostic service and IVD test kits were marketed, and FDA approval and 510(k) clearance routes have been deployed.

Roderik Kraaijenhagen | MD, PhD | Chief Medical Officer

Roderik is a cardiologist with a PhD in the field of vascular medicine (AMC-University of Amsterdam). He is co-founder and medical director of NIPED, a knowledge institute for prevention and eHealth. He also founded CardioVitaal and TromboVitaal, two national healthcare services with a focus on self-regulation and self-management who make use of eCoaching and Telemonitoring. Roderick is also co-creator and owner of the web-based Personal Health Check and the Health-ePortal, having a scientific knowledge and decision-making support system for risk analysis and personal follow-up. Besides these activities, Roderick is the national coordinator Prevention from the European organization of Cardiology, chairman of the Committee for Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation of the Dutch Society of Cardiology, and chairman of the LMDOH – the national multidisciplinary council for cardiac rehabilitation.

Frank Verell | MSc, LL.M, CA | Chief Financial Officer

Frank is a financial advisor acting as interim CFO, CEO or member of a supervisory board of several (inter)national trade-, production and financial companies in the past years. He started his career as Rijksaccountant at the Tax office and became supervisor of banks at the Dutch Central bank (DNB). Floris T.G. van den Brink | PhD | Program Manager Technology R&D

Floris is an electrical engineer who is specialized in micro- and nanotechnology. He obtained his PhD degree in the field of Lab on a Chip, studying the use of microreactors for electrochemical conversion in the application areas of drug screening and proteomics (University of Twente). He closely monitors scientific developments and it is his goal to solve present-day challenges in healthcare and life sciences using new high-potential technologies.

Mark L. Verheijden | PhD | Project Manager Biochip
Development.

Mark studied chemical engineering with a master in material science. His PhD has been at the interface of supramolecular chemistry, material science and biology. He studied the interactions of, for example, cells, viruses and peptides at functionalized sensor surfaces. This type of research is exciting especially now, because developments in biosensing and nanotechnology open up new possibilities at a rapid pace. But the challenge is not just to be smart in combining these fields, but also to bring these developments to the public. Within Qurin, that is what he is trying to achieve.

Samer Aphrham | MSc | Research Scientist

After graduating his BSc. in applied physics, Samer continued his studies with a Master in Nanotechnology aiming to merge all branches of science (e.g. biology, chemistry, physics) together. His thesis was centered on artificial supramolecular tubules that can be used as a minimalistic mimic of cellular cytoskeleton. Hereafter, he sought challenges in which these multidisciplinary knowledges can be utilized to develop a novel nano-devices that can be used in saving human lives around the world. He is now pursuing these goals within Qurin by developing state-of-the-art biosensors for early diagnostics of malignant diseases.

Corry Manting de Vries | MSc | Director Clinical Affairs

Corry has over 20 years of experience in clinical project management. She has worked in biotechnology and non-profit organizations, including many years in international HIV and AIDS studies with the late professor Joep Lange at the International Antiviral Therapy and Evaluation Centre (IATEC) in Amsterdam. In biotechnology, she has managed the development program of products for the treatment of Cockayne Syndrome at DNage, a company that was acquired by Pharming Group in 2006. More recently, she has worked for the Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) on infectious disease studies including vaccine trials and for Arthrogen, acquired by MeiraGTx in 2019, a biotechnology company developing local gene therapy for different indications.
